BOTOX® has been around for a long time now and has been the go to facial treatment to restore the youth of millions of people around the world.

Most commonly used on forehead lines, crow’s feet and frown lines, the BOTOX® injections actually block the signal from the nerve to the muscle that tells it to tense up and contract, meaning that the muscles remain relaxed constantly which causes them to soften and removes the appearance of wrinkles.

The treatment itself revolves around an injection being made in a number of sites on the face, specifically targeting key muscles in areas that are effected.

Once the injections have been made, it will take around 2-3 days for the results to start to show but from this point, the wrinkles will start to disappear and you will find that they don’t return for up to 6 months afterwards.

In short, yes, BOTOX® is completely safe to be used as a cosmetic treatment. It has been FDA approved since 2002 for the purpose of effectively treating wrinkles and the signs of ageing, and although side effect are possible, the treatment is considered safe.

Although wrinkles and the signs of ageing are inevitable as we get older, there’s no reason for them to be permanent. There are a wide range of anti-ageing treatments available such as BOTOX® which can be used to actively fight away those dreaded visual signs and wrinkles.

BOTOX® injections are usually used on the face to stop the signs of ageing in one of the bodies main focal points. Typically, it is used for forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet around the eyes and the “11 lines” that are found between the eyebrows, although in some cases it can also be used as a method of preventing excess sweating.

Botulinum toxin, the long name for BOTOX®, is used as a method of reducing and removing fine lines and wrinkles by paralysing the muscles beneath the skin. It’s other uses include treating excessive sweating, migraines and muscular disorders thanks to the way that it can block nerve impulses.

  • Anyone with an infection at the proposed injection site
  • Anyone who has previously had an allergic reaction to BOTOX® type A
  • Anyone under the age of 18
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Anyone with chronic diseases that affect the muscles

Risks & Side Effects

Generally, our patients tend to tolerate BOTOX® injections very well and the side effects are not common, however there are some that do occur sometimes. These can include;

  • swelling or bruising around the injection site
  • mild pain and tenderness around the injection site
  • headaches
  • flu-like symptoms
  • upset stomach
  • numbness in the chosen area
  • temporary drooping of the eyelids
  • temporary weakness in surrounding muscles
  • malaise or general lack of wellness

In extremely rare cases, a person could have a genetic predisposition to the treatment that results a mild and unusual response to the injection.

It’s also worth noting that in some cases, people who have BOTOX® injections can develop antibodies to the toxin that is used which makes further follow up treatments ineffective.
